Increases in prices push Kenyans change of diet - Daily Nation

The increase in the cost of living forces Kenyans to alter their diet, a world food survey.


Global Scan Incorporated, an international agency of research, said 79 percent of Kenyans have changed their diets due to increases in food prices.


It is the highest percentage to make such a change in the world.


The survey, sanctioned by Oxfam and published Wednesday, notes that 16 000 interviewees in urban and rural, only 23 for one hundred believe weather changes have infringed food production, leading to a diet low in key markets.


"While 75 per cent of Kenyans eat are no longer the same food that they are two years, only a paltry 4 percent changed their diet because of health problems." About 57% of them said that they have not always enough to eat, "according to the report."


The investigation on the food covered at Kenya, Tanzania, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Spain, UK and the USA.


In the 18 countries, an average of 39 per cent of the interviewees have changed their food because food prices increased.


To the Kenya, some restaurants have reduced the portions served to clients a way to maintain low price and stay in business, while some unscrupulous traders have tampered with the machinery used for weighing food.


Many public servants chose to skip meals in the hotels and carry rather meals packed during lunch hour, prayer meetings are recording an influx of visitors.


Oxfam Executive Director Jeremy Hobbs called leaders, including the g-20 countries, act now and set the price of food so that people in poor countries do not cut back on the quantity and quality of food they consume.


"Our plans change rapidly and for too many people, it is a change for the worse," he said.

Martinez NM Governor to expand food stamp supplements - CNBC.com

Is the plate half-full or half empty?

The new food guide just unveiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that Americans fill half of their plates with fruits and vegetables. This view - and the new simple plate design, replacing the food pyramid - are important not forward.

But as a dietitian, I find myself focusing on the contrast between the new icon and federal agricultural subsidies. The icon of the plate and recently came out of the USDA dietary guidelines advise Americans to limit fatty products such as meat and cheese. But the Federal Government continues to subsidize these very products with billions of dollars of taxes, and it does almost no support of fruits and vegetables.

The Government of the United States spends about 16 billion a year on agricultural subsidies. And while more than 60 per cent of agricultural subsidies in recent history have directly and indirectly support meat and dairy, fruits and vegetables obtained less than 1%.

It is clear that the Federal Government understands that the latest nutrition research supports a shift to diets based on plants to help in the fight against heart disease, cancer, obesity and chronic diseases that kill Americans so much. Food recommendations to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains - and they include even articles describing the benefits of the vegetarian and vegan plans.

But the Government is still the difficulty of putting its money where its mouth is.

It is an endless cycle. The Government uses billions of tax dollars to encourage the production of foods that have been linked to chronic diseases, and it uses billions more to cover the resulting hospital bills. In 2008, the medical costs of obesity has added up to $ 147 billion.

Since the introduction of pyramid food first USDA, twenty years earlier, obesity and diabetes have become commonplace. Now, about 27% of young adults are too overweight to qualify for military service, and an estimated three children born in 2000 will develop diabetes. More than 60 per cent of the deaths to the United States are caused by heart disease, cancer and other diseases related to food.

In 1991, the USDA unveiled the first eating right pyramid, which pointed out the grain, fruit and vegetables and reduced emphasis on meat and dairy products. But he quickly withdrew the icon because of objections by the meat industry. The following year, the Department launched a similar but added food guide recommendations of two updated every three servings from the milk group meat and two to three of the Group of products.

The USDA finally takes a bold action by introducing a guide which encourages a shift towards diets rich in plant foods. But, just as the Department provided its food icon a rejuvenation treatment, Congress must reorganize agricultural policy to encourage the production and consumption of healthy foods. Summer feeding programs provide lunches for children - Montgomery Advertiser

Now that school is, some students from the region who have benefited from the free and reduced meals during the school year could be found without a healthy lunch.


But two programs of the State of Minnesota are in place this summer to ensure children accommodation nutritious food during the summer break.


The summer and seamless Summer Food Service programs are offered in communities throughout Alabama, and there is no charge to participants. Seamless summer takes place in local schools, and the summer Food Service takes place in churches or community centers subscribe to feeding sites.


"We have a number of children who eat breakfast at school," said Kay McCreery, Superintendent of recreation for the city of Montgomery. "When school is out, it is an opportunity for children to always get a nutritional breakfast, balanced."


McCreery Department is one of the organizations sponsoring Summer Food Service. She said that the program is possible through a grant from the Ministry of Agriculture of the United States. The grant money is in the Ministry of education of Alabama, and various sponsoring organizations use it to carry out the program.


She said there are 15 feeding sites of the summer in the Montgomery community centres: Chisholm, could, Floyd, Goode Street, gardens Hayneville Road, Highland, Houston Hill, Hunter Station, King Hill, Macedonia, McIntyre, McKee, old Selma Road, Sheridan Heights and Smiley Court.


McCreery said people should check with their community centre nearest to discover the specific lunch time. She said generally, meals are served between 11 am and 1 pm, Monday to Friday.


Students who are 18 years of age or younger are eligible take advantage of the program.


"They just need appears," she said.


The program offers an excellent opportunity for students to receive meals during the summer, especially if their parents are working.


Students can also find healthy meals in different schools through seamless summer program. Montgomery, the program is offered in primary schools in Carver, Halcyon and goods Ferry.

Russia food prices may rise in the short term Inflation stabilizes - Bloomberg

Price of Russian food, which were relaxed to help stabilize inflation may rise in June and July due to the resumption of exports of grain after the drought of last year and an embargo on imports of vegetables from the European Union.

Season 7 of "Food Network Star" kicks off Sunday night with three SoCal competitors vying to be the next Guy Fieri. We've chatted with the local finalists in advance of the new show, including Jyll Everman of Glendora and Penny Davidi of Los Angeles. Now, we meet Katy Clark, 34, of Long Beach:


Katy's arrival in the Top 15 seems like it was predestined. She auditioned on her birthday and then sailed on through to be a finalist. A health and fitness life coach, she is trim, bubbly and has a megawatt smile. Her interests are as varied as her background. A sociology major, she's lived in Minnesota and China -- where she was doing nonprofit work and also started a restaurant catering to expats and others who yearned for more Western cuisine. Now, she's in Long Beach, and her life continues to be a blur of activity: She teaches spin classes at the Belmont Athletic Club, and in addition to her fitness and wellness coaching, she travels Southern California with her cooking classes for kids -- "Look I Can Cook" -- and seminars aimed at boosting the self-esteem of young women, "Beautiful You." As a mother of three, ages 5, 7 and 9, she says she's discovered a trick to getting kids to try gourmet foods: Have someone else introduce it. Kids have a knack for digging in but not when Mom is nagging them. "It happens every time. They won't listen to their mom, but they will listen to someone else's mom, so we moms need to stick together in this."


The reigning Mrs. Long Beach, Katy says balancing healthful foods, fitness and the occasional indulgent snack is all about being realistic. "I ask people, 'What’s your daily life like, so we can get healthy food on the table?' " Once she understands a person's routine, she can help them find ways to add in nutrition, exercise and a piece of chocolate cake everyone once in awhile.


"I am all about light and luscious and learning the balance of both," she said. She said she eats healthfully most of the time, with a rare, well-earned indulgence: "I am all about eating yummy, tasty and fattening food ... but not all the time."


Katy said she was surprised at the drama that unfolded in the first episode. "I actually didn’t expect too much drama; it is the Food Network, but I forgot the whole reality part of the reality show." She steadfastly avoided engaging in the high jinks. "I want to keep my character intact, I didn't want to shove anyone under the bus. I do not want to put other people down."


One of the hardest parts of the competitions was just figuring out where things were while the clock was ticking. "It was a lot harder than I thought. I’m very used to a comfortably sized kitchen. [The Food Network Star Kitchen] is ginormous! And you have to run around to get anything." And then there are the variables that come with a professional kitchen, such as "the heating elements are much hotter. And then there are all these tools that I don’t even use."


Katy's wide and varied interests leave the judges wondering about her focus. That was a challenge for Katy, because she has a genuine interest in all these areas. "There is that little bit of insecurity: Am I bugging these people with all these different viewpoints, am I too peppy?" But in the end, she said she just decided to rely on one of her favorite quotes: “The people who mind don’t matter, and the people that matter don’t mind.”


She says her kids think it's "awesome" that she's competing, and it allows her to be a role model. “They’ve always known Mom to be a competitor. I think it’s important for moms to not lose themselves in their families."

Smoking 2006 Nevada restaurants and bars serving food is significantly harming business.


The Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act was adopted in a ballot election by 54% of voters in 2006. It prohibits the places that serve food with cigarettes, with an exemption for casinos.


The effect is that some companies banned smoking, others stopped serving food so that they could keep smoking while still others have built walls to separate the area smoking area smoking of food bar.


A new study based on sales data was just released by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network saying that the Act had no economic impact on restaurants and bars.


The study comes as Tavern owners are pushing Assembly Bill 571, which has passed the stage of the Legislative Committee and facilitate the restrictions of the law allowing to smoke with food service in limited to age, autonomous, bars taverns and saloons.


Bob Bonner, Member of the Board of the Association of Nevada Tavern owners, said in a report to the Associated Press that the cancer group numbers are "absolutely wrong."
