LOUISVILLE, KY (wave) - controversy exploded on this issue: some people on food stamps, who cannot make their own meals, is allowed to use food stamps in restaurants, including fast food places? It is a proposal that envisages the Kentucky Cabinet for health and Family Services.
"The cost will be immeasurable,", said the Reverend Gerome Sutton. "The damage will be unbearable and the time is unthinkable."
Sutton is raised up and to protest a proposal to allow some people on stamps of food for use in restaurants around Kentucky. Supported by the base of Louisville Yum! Marks, the idea behind the program is to enable the elderly, the disabled and homeless people a way to get a hot meal, but Sutton sees another potential outcome

"Can you imagine the unthinkable harm it will do to our community which feed the people in these fast food restaurants". Sutton said. "It affects the health and well-being of our community and drive the cost of healthcare for the State."
"People already now have the opportunity to enter a grocery store or gas station to buy some chips and pop with their food stamps,", said Natalie Harris, Executive Director of the Coalition for the homeless. "What would be their is to instead of buying of chips and pop, is to obtain a heated up meals.".
Harris supports the proposal and has 20 years ago before Yum! Marks is is involved.
"It is not only a business or a business that grows," she said.
According to Harris, the benefits outweigh potential health problems.
"What we want is a way for people to have more choices and these choices can still make them not choose more healthful foods, but I think that the more choices, you give people, more it is likely that they will chose a good choice," Harris said.
With regard to persons who use food tickets, they had mixed reaction.
"I think that it would be too tempting," said Sherry Lanoie. "I wanting to eat outside all the time and have no money for groceries.
"This would be a wonderful thing," replied Lillian Phillips. "With six grandchildren and you know, I am 55 years old, not wanting to Cook all the time and I have to." What would help me much. »

Yum! Marks would not be an interview with 3 wave, but spokeswoman Virginia Ferguson issued this statement we:
"We support extend program meal restaurant SNAP federal to elderly, disabled persons and homeless because it will provide hot meals to the hungry people who are unable to cook at home and we have explained it to the Rev. Sutton repeatedly.".
The Cabinet of Kentucky for health and Family Services, said that no decision has been made on the proposal at this stage.
